Son of sharecroppers, Tim Murry elected Clermont s first Black mayor

Murry endured racism in Clermont as a youth before leaving for college, then the Air Force. The son of sharecroppers, Murry earned 5 degrees, including a master s. Murry lost 2 races for Clermont City Council before winning in a bid for mayor. CLERMONT  As Tim Murry looked across Lake Minneola, he saw how far he has come. It was 2018, and Murry had organized a Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration. The scheduled speaker called in sick, leaving Murry as the emergency fill-in. As he waited to speak, Murry s mind raced back to a more divided time in his hometown s history. Wow, I’m here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s death, and I’m standing up on the stage in waterfront park in the city of Clermont on a beach that I wasn’t even allowed to swim in, Murry recalled.

Presidents Hall of Fame Clermont: Family aims to revive interest

The hall s key piece is a 1,200-square-foot replica of the White House. CLERMONT  As few cars trickled by on U.S. Highway 27, Jack, James and Randy Zweifel prepared to work. They assembled on Saturday in front of the Presidents Hall of Fame, one of the few roadside attractions that hasn t gone the way of the stagecoach. White paint was poured into trays. Brushes and rollers were nearby, as were ladders and tarps. For the Zweifels, this wasn t only a chance to spruce up the building s exterior. It was an opportunity for the brothers to preserve their father s legacy. John Zweifel, who bought the Presidents Hall of Fame in the early 1990s, died on Dec. 30 in Orlando after being hospitalized because of blood clots in his leg. He was 84 years old.
