different charities, i think. but most of it went to one charity, fisher foundation. explain why that is. that s right, wolf. the amount of money that went to the fisher house foundation was over $100,000, by far the largest donation. that is proceeds from the president s children s book of thee i sing. this has gone to this foundation in recent years as well. it provides free housing of the family members of wounded service members of the military. so when they re at a military or va hospitals and receiving treatment or recovering, their family members can be with them during that time period. there s also other interesting charities that the president and first lady donated to. $2,000 to a charity called cure. citizens united for research in epilepsy. a charity founded by the wife of president obama s top aid, david axelrod. there s a perm connection to
this friday, the organization c.u.r.e., citizens united for research in epilepsy, will kick off a benefit here in chicago. and here with us now, chair and founding member of c.u.r.e., susan axelrod, our good friend. so good for you to be here. great to see you! great for you to come to this town and what a day. pretty perfect, isn t it? talk about the progress that c.u.r.e. is making recently. we made some great breakthroughs this year. we ve got a grantee, basically about research in epilepsy, and we give out grants to people, and we ve had some exciting progress going on, some exciting projects that s going to lead to better therapy for kids. it s really exciting. give us an example. something that gives you open as a mom who has struggled with this for so long.
now up to 25 times a day. that was when they decided to try surgery. they had to drill holes into her skull and implant electrodes through the holes directly on the surface of the brain, put grids of eeg s in there and put medications to bring on seizures. they had her in intensive care after and she was so bloated that she was unrecognizable. it was just a miserable thing. worst of all, it didn t work. david and susan decided to look for their own answers. this year we received 108. susan, with other parents, founded a nonprofit called the citizens united for research in epilepsy. or the cure. our focus has really been, let s try to truly once and for all start to understand the disease and approach it more rationally and not just think about the seizures. they have given out more than
