GM Paul Dress wraps up long career at Bay Point

The Beacon After 46 years service as the face of Bay Point Resort and Marina in a variety of positions, General Manager John Paul Dress will be retiring this week. From a college kid working summers at the Bay Point Gate House to becoming general manager in 2017, Dress has helped the Bay Point Resort grow from a collection of cottages and a small marina to the expansive, luxury marina and campground that is now the largest in Ottawa County. Over the years, Dress has worked in maintenance, and as marina manager and operations manager. He was named assistant general manager in January 2016 and general manager in 2017.

Oklahoman A MAPS 3 advisory committee wants to know why the Oklahoma City Convention Center s management company, ASM Global, is requesting two wheelchair ramps between the third-floor atrium and the ballroom level. Construction is quickly wrapping up on the 550,000-square-foot convention center, which was dedicated last month. Ballroom access is by two short sets of stairs or by elevator. The proposed ramps add an accessible option. Tom McDaniel, chairman of the MAPS 3 Citizens Advisory Board and chairman of the convention center advisory committee, told the Citizens Advisory Board last week there was some angst on the part of advisory committee members.

NAACP calls on Caroline Sheriff s Office to remove thin blue line flag

A flag that some believe is a symbol of support for police officers and others criticize as being adopted by white supremacists has flown over the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office for the past several months. The Caroline County Branch NAACP has requested Sheriff Tony Lippa remove the flag, just as he did a “Blue Lives Matter” sign that was on the office’s grounds before it was replaced with a sign reminding citizens to “Support Those Who Protect You.” Lippa agreed to remove the “Blue Lives Matter” sign after hearing from Black community members and meeting with the NAACP in January.

San Diego mayor proposes police reforms, lays out public safety priorities

SAN DIEGO    Mayor Todd Gloria announced a package of public safety reforms Friday that he said are aimed at addressing disparities in policing and increasing transparency and accountability for the San Diego Police Department. Among the 11 reforms and so-called policy priorities are proposals to eliminate existing gang injunctions, explore alternatives to arresting low-level offenders and review the types of non-emergency calls to which officers respond. Other proposals deal with hiring practices and anti-bias training for officers, exploring potential limits on the sometimes controversial practice known as pretext stops and removing the city’s Office of Homeland Security from the control of the Police Department.

The Ocoee Commissioner heard about concerns regarding homelessness from representatives from Matthew s Hope, while also electing a new mayor pro tem and appointing commission liaisons to various boards during their meeting Tuesday, April 6. Since March 20, 2007, the commission has utilized the policy they put into place over a decade ago to elect the mayor pro tem annually even in non-election years by rotating down through the seniority list. This year s title of mayor pro tem went from Commissioner Larry Brinson to Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen.
