right now, the federal government is on the ground in the virgin islands but i believe that there s a real disconnect between what the federal government and fema have been told, that are the issues with the people of the virgin islands and what the grassroots and what the actual individuals residents are needing. for example, the army corps was happy to tell me that they were able to get the potable water up. po most people in the virgin islands their homes are not powered by city water or water coming from a municipality. they are collected from rainwater and we have cisterns. the epa is not doing any testing in those homes. that s the kind of issue where there s a real disconnect. we hear headlines about what s happening in puerto rico. i can t tell you the low morale that the people of virgin islands have right now about how
city water. rely on the cisterns in their houses and the electric pumps to provide the water this come to their showers. they can t even turn on the faucet to get some sort of drinking water, any water, they can t even boil it if they were to get water. unless they have a gas stove. yes. yeah, exactly, right? it s this cascade effect. and it s not just something, you know, as basic as bathing. it s something that s essential to life as medicine. because think about it this way. if you can t access the internet, your pharmacy can t call your insurance company to verify your insurance the phone lines don t even work down there. because the phone lines don t work, the internet doesn t work. and because we re such a cashless society now, it s a big deal in terms of getting money. they can t go to the atm and get money and they can t use their credit card at the stores to get supplies. it s a mess. health and human services
to breach the tanks and break them apart. obviously, when the power goes, that water becomes rapidly used, it s rapidly fed off the hills and then it dissipates. and the water plant is up and running. so now they re beginning to replenish those plants and folks, you know, they don t need electricity to get water out of the pipes. so as we funnel pressure into the distribution lines on the ground, then folks are getting access to more and more water. we ve even got water into the tan tanks in st. john because they re fed under sea to st. thomas i mean to st. john, and being able to fill up the tanks there, those persons connected to water will get them. and remember in the virgin islands we use what you would use in the united states as basements, we really use that as something called cisterns. so when it rains you capture water under your home in the cistern and then you feed from that. and we advise folks to disconnect the spouting to their
immediately. some of the kids, they forego going to school to get the water for their family. we provided cisterns up there to catch water to have the water there means they can have a better education. you realize how much you take for granted when you get to go and visit different places. but you realize how much we don t say thank you for the things we do have or we don t stop to think about wow, i can walk today. i have a water bottle. i m very thankful for this right now. jordin admits that singing is what really drives her. but she has been able to use her fame to shine a light on issues and causes she cares deeply about. i have to sing. every day i wake up and i know that there will be a moment where i will be singing whether it s at home by myself or i have a show. i m compelled to. i was a fan of the show. an then i auditioned because i thought it would be fun. and i made it on the show and i m like, whoa, i really have to do this now. and that was really crazy. because i
