Court is (finally) back in session in Ocala

On Monday, for the first time in almost a year, a jury trial was held at the Marion County Judicial Center. Some jurors in State vs. Milo Holden sat in the jury box. Others sat elsewhere in the courtroom  all the better to achieve social distancing, according to a lawyer who was there. At lunch, the courtroom was cleared so the jurors could spread out and dine. The same thing happened when it was time to deliberate: Instead of retiring to a small conference room, the jurors stayed in the courtroom and everyone else left, the lawyer said Everyone wore a mask. When a witness was sworn in to testify, he or she removed the mask and used a face shield.

Marion County courthouse works to protect jurors from COVID

Editor s note: Mondays will be reserved for picking juries for circuit court cases, such as felony trials and major civil matters, while Tuesdays are set aside for county court cases, such as misdemeanors and smaller civil actions. This story has been revised to correctly reflect that schedule. Officials with the clerk s office say that the hundreds of residents who have been summoned to the Marion County Judicial Center on Monday and Tuesday for jury service won t have to worry about health safety. How, in the era of COVID-19, will this work? The clerk s office said 450 people have been called to the courthouse on Monday for possible jury service on a felony trial. Another 225 people are summoned to show up Tuesday for possible service in civil trials.
