The Vista Unified School District is addressing racial inequity through a working group that seeks to unravel discrimination in education.
The Superintendent’s Council for Equity and Anti-racism consists of students, parents, teachers, social workers, administrators, community members, board members and others. It held several meetings in the fall, a public forum in December, and a workshop with the school board last week to discuss the steps toward rooting out racial bias in schools.
As social unrest unfolded throughout the country following the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd in May of last year, some schools have begun to examine their role in establishing racial equity, and how their educational practices have advanced or failed to promote those goals.
