With the major studios pulling many blockbusters from their release schedules this meant that when cinemas did reopen in July 2020, there were few if any major studio titles to see. Of those prospective billion-dollar earners, only Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, got a substantial cinema release in the UK and elsewhere, taking $350m globally. Hollywood trade magazine Variety wondered if that wasn’t bad for a film released in a pandemic and with no cinemas open in New York or LA. No Time to Die has been rescheduled three times, rumoured to be costing MGM $1m a month in interest payments.

200,000 free cinema tickets offered for National Lottery Cinema Weekend The free tickets will be available at more than 500 multiplexes and independent cinemas around the UK on the weekend of 19 and 20 June. 29 April 2021 National Lottery Cinema Weekend, in partnership with the BFI, will take place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June at more than 500 cinema sites across the UK (pending confirmation that restrictions will be relaxed as planned). Cinema Weekend will make over 200,000 free tickets available to watch any film screening across the weekend, as a thank you to National Lottery players for their vital contribution to film. Through the BFI, the National Lottery supports new and established filmmakers, film education and training, as well as enabling the UK public to see a wide range of films. National Lottery Cinema Weekend is an expansion on two previous Cinema Days (in 2018 and 2019), which enables players to access cinemas for free.
