Named in her honor: Madelyn Helling, former Nevada County librarian, dies at 95

People knew her for her volunteer work with several groups. They remember her passion for libraries. And, of course, they know about the Nevada County Madelyn Helling Library. Helling, a former county librarian, died Tuesday. She was 95. Born in Bismarck, North Dakota, Helling worked for the San Francisco Public Library before moving to Nevada County, where she served as county librarian from 1974 to 1991. In 1991, soon after her retirement, the Madelyn Helling Library, named in her honor, was established in Nevada City.

Nevada County Library launches app

Special to the Sierra Sun Nevada County launched its new Community Library mobile app on Monday as part of a continued outreach effort throughout the pandemic. Penn Valley Library Branch Manager Cindy Pawlowski said the app found by searching “Nevada County Library” in the app store was designed to improve people’s accessibility to the libraries’ educational and entertainment resources during and between government shutdowns. “We determined that it would help make things more accessible, but it’s also something we can use beyond that,” Pawlowski said. “Most people nowadays are using their phones more than their laptop.” Pawlowski said County Librarian Nick Wilczek recognized the need for mobile support, then researched and connected with a private company to create the app.

Penn Valley Library moves to new location

  The Penn Valley Branch Library will open in its new location on Jan. 21. Located at 11252 Pleasant Valley Road in the Wildwood Shopping Center, community members will be able to virtually visit the new library on their social media site at https://www.facebook.com/nevadacountylibrary . “We look forward to a more widespread come-on-in opening when COVID restrictions are lifted and we can have a grand opening event to show off the new space,” said Branch Manager Cindy Pawlowski. The size of the library has more than doubled from 1,000 square feet to over 2,140 and will be filled with a collection of over 6,000 books and other materials. In 2018, the library met with the residents of Penn Valley and globally-renowned architecture firm Gensler to determine the needs and interests of the community.
