Soup for the Soul wins Kentucky Board of Education award Posted By: Features Editor February 24, 2021 Ciara Benham cbenham@murraystate.edu In recognition of its efforts to help the community, Soup for the Soul was awarded the Kentucky Board of Education 2020 Kevin C. Brown Strategic Priority Award.  Soup for the Soul is a non-profit soup kitchen that serves hot meals to the Murray community.  “Our mission is to serve the hungry of our community by sharing the love of God through giving food for the body, kindness for the soul and a hope for the future,” said Program Manager and Volunteer Coordinator Olivia Robison. 

Valentine s Day during a pandemic: What couples are doing

@murraystate.edu Undoubtedly, Valentine’s Day looks different this year because of COVID-19, but college sweethearts are finding ways to keep love alive in the pandemic. Couples at Murray State have come up with unique ways to celebrate their relationship this Feb. 14, while remaining safe and socially distant.  From childhood friends to highschool sweethearts, sophomore Hannah Lawson and her boyfriend, both from Murray, are keeping tradition this year. Lawson met her boyfriend of three and a half years when they were just kids at a country club pool. Later, through their church youth group, the pair began to date and subsequently celebrate Valentine’s Day together.

Trombone major wins competition Posted By: Features Editor January 28, 2021 Ciara Benham cbenham@murraystate.edu A sophomore music performance major at Murray State was triumphant in a Kentucky Music Teachers Association competition after submitting an audition in October.  Luke Weatherly, from Paris, Tennessee, won the Bluegrass Brass Young Artist Competition for ages 19-26 for three solo trombone pieces.  Weatherly is a student of Li Kuang, professor of music, who informed him about the opportunity to compete in the KMTA competition. As an aspiring professional musician, Weatherly jumped on the chance to enter. “I get to put myself out there in the small world of music,” Weatherly said. “The countless hours of working on details in the music and my sound pays off when I get to perform.”

Murray State alumni signs record deal Posted By: Features Editor November 12, 2020 Ciara Benham cbenham@murraystate.edu Murray State alumni have taken their nu metalcore band, Cohen, to the next level after signing with Modern Empire record label two weeks ago. With Modern Empire, band member Trever Williams and former Murray State students Nick Erickson, Zachary Orr, Gage Girten and Kenton Smith are set to release a new EP “Suffer” on Friday, Nov 20. The band, who has had five members for about a year and a half, began much smaller in 2015. Primary vocalist Nick Erickson began attending Murray State in 2014, majoring in journalism and minoring in English. Erickson said Murray State taught life skills that would help him later with his music career.
