deep and sincere sympathy reporter: you can see here at lax, paul ciancia open fire at the bottom of the stairs where flowers are where the tsa agent fell. he went up the escalator and turned around because he saw he was moving and fired again according to officials. but the 23-year-old accomplished two of his goals when he came here to lax, not the suicide mission part but did want to kill a transportation security administration officer and also to show how easy it is to get a gun into the airport. and this could very well lead to changes in how airport security is run as we heard from eric holder earlier this morning. again, ciancia was shot four times, at least once in the mouth. he s sedated under heavy guard and still in critical condition. we do know he was unemployed motorcycle mechanic who just recently moved to los angeles from a small town, a blue collar town of pensville, new jersey.
as stephanie elam reports. we were up in security at the time of the shooting and we heard the initial gun shots. reporter: police say alleged gunman paul ciancia entered los angeles international airport s terminal three friday morning armed with an assault rifle and five magazines of ammunition. the fbi says it recovered a handwritten note on ciancia that made it clear he was out to kill multiple tsa officers. authorities say he shot tsa officer gerardo hernandez at point-blank range, sending passengers in the security screening area running for cover. investigators say then ciancia went up an escalator but after apparently spotting hernandez still moving on the floor, he doubled back to shoot him again, killing hernandez. there was a pause and so i looked down the escalator and i saw the gunman, he had his gun trained on the guy on the wall there and he shot him twice. reporter: in the end, two more tsa officers and a traveler were hit.
many more weapons into an airport environment. with people who probably are not going to have quite as much training or ability as the local police officers who get expensive training. so you know, the question in this is i think for my mind, isn t so much whether tsa should be armed. think the decisions is for them not to be. the question if they re not armed and if the police know it, where are the police? it is incumbent on the police to have enough officers there, to back them up. because those tsa officers are the first line of inspection before someone goes to the boarding and departure areas of aircraft. that s the issue here, that ciancia had time to shoot the first tsa officer. take an escalator up, take an escalator down, shoot again and there s still no officer in sight. we want to take a moment to talk about the victims of the
