in iowa. this is major league politics here. she is going to throw some red meat to the crowd but not risk alienating. we have to talk about the separation from the evangelical community, the separation from peel who were looking for someone who is kind of an upstanding forthright person to now being a political evangelical. and you grew up as an evangelical. you really understand. i haven t been in a long time, but my mother, who has been for a long time, and you go to services in the 2000s, and they d be playing videos about george bush right before service started, and how he was a man of faith. but here is the problem that i have. you have barack obama, right, who is married and got two children. they go to church and they re good people. you got joe biden who goes to church every sunday. he is one of the most devout catholics that we ve had that we can think of. but nobody seems to think that s okay. iowa, of course the des moines register poll, 80% of the people who show up
i mean, i guess it does now when you think back. my dad was a police officer, then they moved into the p.i. world as a couple. i grew up in a pretty, like, simple childhood, as far as mom had cookies after school, we went to church every sunday. but during the day, they were doing some crazy stuff. catching people cheating was kind of their job. so it was, you know look back, especially at the clinton case, i was about 13 when that happened. luke, my little brother, just kind of stayed with my grandma, went to school like normal through all of that. now when i tell people as an adult, they re like, what? how many crazy stories do you have? i m like, well, there s peeks at some of those stories in my records. tattoos. you have a bunch of them. i do. tattoos! i like that. they re not showing right now. if you were wearing the shirt i was going to talk about i ve got. pistols and wings.
belief. but my question that i had during reading it, and perhaps you can answer it, is why the focus on mormons? or was there a focus specifically on mormons? there is something typical of an affinity fraud, which is when an investment opportunity like this spreads through a community. because there is a higher level of trust, that scrutiny isn t there, right? you trust the person who you see at church every sunday, who lives in your ward, who you see at the grocery store. you don t expect to be taken advantage of by someone that you trust. it spread quickly through the mormon community for that reason. so this story, there s just so much in it, and i don t know if it has been optioned yet, but it should be. gambling debt was at the core of it. one of the perpetrators was badly in debt. as many as what his way of getting out of it.
role in a lot of the problems that we re facing. even if you want to take a faith aspect out of it, when people went to church every sunday, or when they went to synagogues, when they went to mosques more regularly, and they would be around other people, i know in my church at least, somebody in sunday school would say something crazy, and you would be like, let s talk about that. and there was a community that kept people from going over the side of a cliff. there was a community in our church every sunday, every wednesday. people had connections. those connections are breaking apart. those connections are shattering. for me and my experience, i look at church attendance going down, and i see that as a real problem. others may look at civic organizations falling apart,
and it got deeper. before he faked his college transcripts, he was convicted of forging checks. now, said the investigators, the respective doctor was looking anything but respectable. it tells me that this is not the guy that goes to church every sunday with his family. so there s two martin meals? there s two of them. still, but martin s daughters? they went to their fathers list of offenses. the fraud, the infidelity. how they encouraged his mother to have surgery, and take so many drugs afterwards. and they were certain, their father killed their mother. he betrayed us to the very core. i mean, everything that we thought in our life is just all shattered. it s all a sham? it really is. it s been a whole sham. but not everyone in the family felt that way.
