Ryu Hyun-jin of the Toronto Blue Jays has become the first Asian player to win the Warren Spahn Award, given to the best left-handed pitcher of the season in Major League Baseball.
Created in 1999, the award is named after Warren Spahn, who holds the MLB record for the most wins by a left-hander.
In 2019, when he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, he was a favorite for the award with an MLB-best ERA but was edged out by Patrick Corbin of the Washington Nationals.
Ryu finally won the award this year after going 5-2 with a 2.69 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 12 games.
