By Butch Dale Denny Mennen • • • The Coal Creek Central Bearcats had some great teams in the mid-1960s, and one of their key players was Denny Mennen, who graduated in 1967. How do I know? Because I played against Denny in both basketball and baseball, and he was a top-notch competitor.
Denny started on the varsity basketball team during his junior and senior years. In 1966, with teammates such as Larry Lidester, Lee Fouts, Chuck McKnight and Rich Stonebraker, the Bearcats finished with a record of 20-6 (the best record in their school s history), won their first Sectional tourney, and were runner-up in the county tourney, losing by just two points to New Market. In Denny s senior year, the Bearcats won the County tourney, defeating Waynetown, Linden and Ladoga. In that tourney, Denny was on fire . . . scoring 22, 21 and 31 points in the t
