The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has
confirmed that a case of fraud alternatively theft was opened with regards to
the so-called Heritage Fund as reported by the complainant.
This came after, ANC Veteran and businessman Tokyo Sexwale
revealed that funds from the Heritage Fund which he has been heading has been
stolen.
During a media briefing, this afternoon Sexwale told the
media that he needed to bring more clarity on the Heritage Fund.
He said he realised that the money which was donated by a
man from Asia was being stolen, he wrote to the Reserve Bank governor, Lesetja

Charismatic African National Congress (ANC) veteran and businessman Mosima Gabriel “Tokyo” Sexwale was the talk of the nation over the last week after he appeared on television and claimed that he was privy to a Heritage Fund worth billions of rand that was stolen from.
Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) were aware of the fund, according to Sexwale but the government quickly rubbished the claims, saying that the businessman had fallen victim to a “scam.”
After Mboweni dismissed Sexwale’s claims, the ANC veteran was the butt of many jokes on social media, but he was not to be deterred. Sexwale announced that he would hold a press conference at 14:00 on Thursday, 22 April, after the government told him the onus to prove the existence of the fund.
This was a press briefing for the ages – if you were able to follow a money trail that may or may not exist. Tokyo Sexwale came out all guns blazing on Thursday, diving deep into the mythical ‘Heritage Fund’. The public figure believes that the government is embezzling funds from the state coffers – but it could well be Mr. Sexwale who has been defrauded.

The official line from SARB is that Sexwale fell victim to the very common ‘419 scam’ – Spokesperson Ziyanda Mtshali stated that the renowned businessman was duped by his partners, and tricked into ploughing a large chunk of his billion-rand fortune into this Heritage Fund. Several prominent South Africans have allegedly fallen victim to this.
