2 days ago Share As supplies grow more plentiful, Sarasota County health officials are focused on encouraging harder-to-reach populations to get vaccinated.
Nearly half of the county’s population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, a figure the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County is both happy with and intent on improving.
During the last week, the health department has begun a new phase of vaccine distribution. On Friday and Saturday, the department hosted its first walk-up clinics at Sarasota Square Mall, offering a first dose of vaccine to anyone older than 18. On Monday, the department shut down the vaccine registration system that residents have used to make appointments for shots since January.
Staff COVID-19 cases decrease in Sarasota, Manatee schools
Both Sarasota County and Manatee County school districts recorded low numbers of employees testing positive for COVID-19 this week, as access to vaccinations expands.
Manatee Schools had no staff test positive for the week as of Friday morning, the first time that has happened this school year. In Sarasota County, seven staff members tested positive this week, the lowest number of positives since October.
That is a dramatic shift from weeks ago, when competition for the shot was fierce, limited to senior citizens and required people to sign up in an online registry to qualify.

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - On Wednesday, Chuck Henry, the health officer at Sarasota Department of Health, announced that starting this Friday, all vaccine appointments at the Sarasota Square Mall would be walk up with no appointment necessary.
He also announced that the county would cease using the existing registration system starting April 12.
Those who have registered appointments should continue to keep those. However, if you are waiting on your second dose of the vaccine, you should walk up on or close to the date you were told to come for your next dose.
