The slayings that occurred in three massage businesses in Atlanta is a clear indication of how dangerous sex work is. The fact that these murdered women were all working out of massage parlours illustrates the importance of drawing a clear line to the public between massage health professionals and massage parlours or body rub establishments, because it puts massage health professionals roughly at the same level of risk of harm as sex workers.
Massage therapy has historically been subjected to harmful, deeply embedded stereotypes that sexualize this health profession. As a result, massage therapists are sexually harassed, propositioned and sometimes sexually assaulted by clients who assume that any massage has some possibility of sexual access to the massage therapist’s body.
