Firearms manufacturer sees sales jump during pandemic

A worldwide pandemic, political turmoil and mass shootings are usually not good for most businesses, but for firearms manufacturers like Sturm, Ruger & Co. they have meant increased revenue and profits.
The company reported a nearly 50% boost in revenue, to $184.4 million, for the first quarter of 2021 over the same quarter in 2020. It also said its net income more than doubled to $38.2 million for the same period, and it announced a quarterly dividend of 71 cents a share.
Some of the boost was generated by development of new firearms, but background checks show that sales increased 13%, and in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ruger said the hike in sales may be attributed to “increased public concern about personal protection and home defense in reaction to:

Top executives earned 58 times a median employee

The average pay of CEOs at publicly traded companies in New Hampshire went down and average worker pay rose during the pandemic, though, in total, executives still were paid more than 58 times the median worker’s salary, according to proxy statements.
That’s a lower ratio than U.S. companies as a whole, CEO -to-worker pay ratio is over 300-1, as well as lower than the 68-1 ratio recorded among New Hampshire public companies in 2019.
For instance, Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, the for-profit hospital chain – which in New Hampshire owns Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Exeter Hospital and Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester – paid its CEO, Samuel N Hazen, $30.4 million, some 556 times the pay of its median worker.
