Over the past 49 years, the Stephen Schwartz/Roger O. Hirson musical “Pippin” has been continuously reshaped by directors aiming to adapt the story to changing times.
Bob Fosse’s original 1972 production was dark and bawdy, with actors in harlequin makeup. A 1998 production rewrote the ending, and the 2013 revival set the story in a circus tent with trapeze and acrobats.
A new filmed production by the San Diego State University School of Theatre, Television and Film takes bits of all three productions for a smaller, simpler and more straightforward retelling of this coming-of-age story for the medieval Prince Pippin. It played May 4-8 only.
