N.J. man charged with burning body after Christmas Eve murder is arrested near Mexico border

A New Jersey resident accused of killing a 42-year-old man and then burning his body on Christmas Eve in Plainfield was arrested near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.
The victim, David Chacon of Plainfield, was identified using DNA evidence after charred human remains burned beyond recognition were found near the 800 block of West Front Street at about 10 a.m. on Dec. 24, 2020, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.
An investigation led detectives to Oscar Rodriguez, who was charged in February with murder and desecration of human remains. He was arrested March 28 in Brownsville, Texas.

Authorities in Union County are investigating last week s discovery of human remains.
Plainfield police responded to reports of the remains found near the 800 block of West Front Street in Plainfield around 10 a.m. Dec. 24, acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Ruotolo and Plainfield Police Director Lisa Burgess jointly announced Tuesday.
Ruotolo said only that the incident is considered a suspicious death and is under investigation. The victim remains unidentified.
The Union County Homicide Task Force, Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and Plainfield Police Division responded, and launched an investigation.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 24, officers from the Plainfield Police Division responded to a call reporting human remains near the 800 block of W Front Street in Plainfield.
Upon discovery of human remains at the scene, the Union County Homicide Task Force, Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit, and Plainfield Police Division began an investigation into the incident.

A suspicious death that occurred on Christmas Eve in Plainfield is still under investigation this week, officials said.
Plainfield police officers responded to the 800 block of West Front Street in the city shortly after 10 a.m. on Dec. 24 after someone called to report that they found human remains in the area, according to a joint release from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and the Plainfield Police Department.
Police discovered the remains and an investigation was launched, the office said.
The remains had not been identified as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, police said. No other information, including the age or gender of the victim, or the cause of death, was released.
