The ceremony included remarks by Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, Jersey City Deputy Police Chief Nicola Flora and Cathy McBride, whose son, Melvin Santiago, was killed in the line of duty in 2014.

Jersey City Police Dept. pays tribute to fallen officers at 2021 Police Unity Tour kickoff

Over the course of a week, the 50 officers participating will ride from Jersey City to Washington, DC.
Despite the tour being shortened from four days to one due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Jersey City Police Cycling Team raised $100,000 for the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial and Museum. Last year’s tour was cancelled altogether.
“It is a tough environment to be a police officer. There’s a lot of questions that are valid questions on what policing looks like in today’s world, questions around transparency and accountability,” Mayor Steven Fulop said.
