Portland Road in Hove: Speeding traffic petition launched

There have been a number of traffic incidents on Portland Road in Hove AN ACCIDENT and speeding traffic have led to two petitions calling for improved safety on a busy road in Hove. The petitions, asking for a 20mph limit along Portland Road and an improved crossing, were presented to Brighton and Hove City Council at Hove Town Hall. Conservative councillor Robert Nemeth presented a petition, signed by 687 people, calling for the speed limit to be cut from 30mph to 20mph. He favoured corner build-outs and entrance humps on side roads – and he said that before the pandemic he had met representatives of local schools and parents and they supported the proposals.

Woman sent flying after being hit by car in Hove

A WOMAN was sent flying several yards into the air after being hit by a car in Hove yesterday. The pedestrian was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with a serious injury after the collision in Portland Road. Emergency services were called to the scene around 3.15pm, following reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian. The injured pedestrian remains in hospital following the incident on Portland Road. Writing on Twitter, one man who claimed to see the accident said the woman was screamed in agony on the kerb after being hit. Witness Christopher Hawtree said the street would benefit from being turned into a 20mph zone with additional lights.

Brighton and Hove council meeting embroiled in racism row

BRIGHTON and Hove city council debated nuclear weapons in an explosive meeting branded “disgraceful” by the standards chief after a row about racism. City councillors debated the feasibility and benefits of nuclear disarmament in a Full Council meeting which was abandoned after the live stream went down amid technical difficulties. The meeting became embroiled in a row about racism. Conservative councillor Mary Mears questioned the council’s anti-racist stance after councillor Nancy Platts had not answered Argus questions relating to her time in Jeremy Corbyn’s office when he was Labour leader. These questions were raised in October following the publication of a damning report by the human rights watchdog which found the Labour Party responsible for “unlawful” harassment and discrimination of its Jewish members.
