A London lawyer called the province “callous” for removing a makeshift memorial at the city jail Monday without notifying all of the families who set up wooden crosses to honour their loved ones.
The Ontario grievance board ruled in May the province must remove the 18 memorial crosses near the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC) on Exeter Road because the unsanctioned tribute damages the mental health of jail staff.

The crosses were removed on Monday without notifying all the families who erected them in memory of the men and women who have died at the jail, said lawyer Kevin Egan, who advocates for jail reform.
