This is the first time in many years that I havenât spent a good deal of the holiday season helping in one way or another with the production of one or more Christmas plays.
In a way, this has been something of a relief. Christmas plays are stressful and, should the Ghost of Christmas Plays Past take me on a tour, most of the stops would involve disasters that (most of the time) didnât quite happen.
On one show, the off-stage actors had to take to take turns holding up the set so it wouldnât fall down during the performance. In another show, my most vivid memory is of the off-stage cast holding hands and praying that the leading actress would actually hit that dramatic high note that was just above her comfortable singing range (she did!). Then there was that Sunday school production where a preschool angel started playing with an Advent candle and threatened to set the whole church on fire.
