fighting in springfield. same-sex couples will be able to have the same rate rights as straight couples. this afternoon the state senate approved a measure by a vote solve 22-34. this after the state house narrowly approved it last night. 20 follow through on the pledge to sign into law now that it s clear both the house and senate. i think it s a proud day for the people of our state. i commend every more member of the house of representatives and senate as well. reporter: many who oppose say they should not be focusing on the civil unions and should be focusing on the financial problems and economic problems. a policy of illinois, you can expect the same in our schools. the mothers and fathers of your districts will not be in support of this. reporter: today s votes a huge victory for gay rights in illinois. we are thrilled that the illinois legislature has taken this step to making illinois a state that is now more equal and more fair. reporter: christopher c
