Health care workers had added stress during the pandemic, but many felt that they were already dealing with low wages and minimal staff.
Home care employees feel the same way, and many have had to leave the workforce.
One woman in Syracuse has been able to stay home with the use of home care for years, but after 14 years her provider was forced to leave her position due to the low wages.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed both physical and mental stress on health care workers across the state, but even before the pandemic struck, many of these workers were already battling low wages and understaffing.
Agnes McCray, who lives in Syracuse, says home care has allowed her to remain in her home, but recently, her home care provider of 14 years had to leave her position since she could no longer afford to live off of sub-minimum wage.
“What my worker provides me, you can t pay enough,” McCray, who is also the Access and Independent for All (ARISE) president said. “Just to know that they can t even make basic minimum wage, it s really tragic.”

A nonprofit that advocates for home health aides is calling on elected officials to address public transportation shortages and fund training to advance the delivery of care for homebound older adults.
Toward this end, the Massapequa-based nonprofit All Things Home Care launched a new “Adopt a Senior” initiative. The effort aims to raise money to subsidize costly transportation costs for home health aides so that they can easily get to and from work.
