Los organismos de las Naciones Unidas se congratulan por la reubicación de 4.000 refugiados y solicitantes de asilo desde Grecia y alientan a dar más pasos hacia un mecanismo europeo sistemático y regular Posted: 06/24/21 Atenas  –  La OIM, la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones, el ACNUR, el Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados, y UNICEF, el Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia, se congratularon hoy (24-06) con la noticia acerca de la reubicación de 43 solicitantes de asilo en dos vuelos rumbo a Francia. Su llegada en el marco del programa de reubicación de la Unión Europea (UE) que es manejado por el Gobierno de Grecia ha llevado la cifra total de personas reubicadas desde Grecia a otros países europeos a más de 4.000.

Thousands of refugees at risk of homelessness in Greece

LONDON: Thousands of refugees and migrants currently in Greece are at risk of becoming homeless, as an EU scheme to provide temporary shelter and cash assistance is set to end. Aid groups and international bodies have appealed for action as up to 2,000 men, women and children in Greece face destitution as the EU-funded Filoxenia program draws to an end. The program worked with hotels to provide shelter for refugees and migrants, but it has been drawing to its long-planned end since December. Already many hotels have ceased hosting refugees, and in the coming days up to 750 more people are at risk of being ejected from their accommodation.

Portugal has consistently been a champion of the refugee cause. The country’s efforts to uphold refugee protection principles and processes were particularly remarkable during the challenging time of the coronavirus pandemic. “While some countries shut their doors and imposed restrictions hindering access to territory and asylum for people fleeing violence and persecution, Portugal took exemplary steps to safeguard the rights of refugees early on in the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Grandi.
