The medal haul gave the Waitara Sprint Kayak Club a top four national ranking. Masters entry Christine Berben won her K2 200m and 500m races while Carl Barnes took gold in the K1 1000m, and K4 200m. Troy Burbidge (Masters), and Ben McCallum and Fletcher Moles (U23) also finished strongly. McCallum, who trains at Lake Karapiro and was invited to join the national high performance squad, made the K1 200m A final with Fletcher. The postponement of the national flat water sprint kayaking champs in February forced the kayakers to reset training to focus on competing three months later in May, club president Paul Randall said.
