Karl Fender is struggling to make himself heard above the whirr of helicopters landing every three minutes, delivering guests to the launch of Levantine Hill Estate’s new $30 million-plus multi-level winemaking and events facility in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.
Funnily enough, he is trying to explain over the din how the exposed steel purlins of the winery’s striking barrel vault structure, clad in corrugated iron, evoke the idea of flight.
“They’re almost like feathers at the edge of the wings of a bird,” says the prominent Melbourne architect, co-founder of Fender Katsalidis. “It’s a statement of lightness, of flight. It also shows how the building has been made, like it’s been peeled back.”
