They are George Packer whose latest book the man who ran washington Richard Holbrooke and the man who ran washington and the life and times of james a. Baker, iii. Two brilliant books about two complicated and fascinating men. They were born a decade apart. Baker in houston in 1930 and holbrooke in manhattan in 1941. Baker a republican trained as a lawyer, holbrooke a democrat Foreign Service officers student of Foreign Policy. Their lives are very different and they are project trees but they both ended up in washington where they became major power players. Peter, picking up on that this is a man with great ambition and i was there even before he came to washington. Yeah it was. He was a family of aristocracy. His family built modern houston and he was expected to do great things. A very dominating father who is in part done him the legacy of his family. One thing they were
Reading your book. Its so intimate. I want to thank you for writing it. I am going to dive in. You received an emotional inheritance from your aunt. Tell our audience what it was, the physical inheritance and the family. When i was a boy in new orleans in the late 1960s, marx was a horn wasnt elderly retired schoolteacher and was an historian. We were all in new orleans and she was the keeper among others, of our klansmen. She had papers and files in had a way of speaking about our family, another one to remember is our klansmen, my grandfather he was a redeemer. The redemption returned like people after theyve been dislodged. If he had not there, who would not be here today. Anyway, when she died, her papers went to my mother and when my other died, decades later, her files came to me. This is how i rediscovered the story of our klansmen. Well, i have just finished the splendid and the vile by erik larson, wonderful account of churchill and his family, really in the worst year of the war, the year right after he becomes prime minister, may may 101940, literally the day of the german invasion of the countries in france. And then basically what it was like to stood alone against nazi germany until june the 41 the russians are in the war and then obviously by december the 41 the United States is in the war. Its an extraordinary book, so its a wonderful read about a a guy that i consider literally the greatest person in the 20th century and the supreme ordeal of a long and brilliant career.
