GREAT BARRINGTON â Questions, comments, concerns? Residents of Housatonic were given the virtual floor Tuesday evening in a Zoom meeting hosted by the Select Board.
Ongoing problems with the villageâs water supply proved the main concern, as did traffic and the upkeep of town-owned property.
âIâm so tired of bathing the kids in water that is disgusting,â said Denise Forbes, one of several residents who raised the issue of the villageâs problematic water supply. âAnd I look at my towels when I take them out, and the towels are stained from this water.â
An engineering report commissioned by the town to study infrastructure problems with the villageâs private water provider, Housatonic Water Works, was released in June. The report said upgrades, replacements and changes to bring the system up to snuff would cost an estimated $31 million. The Select Board will host a second engineering presentation on Monday.
It s Not That Simple with co-hosts Ed Abrahams (Great Barrington Select Board member) and Pedro Pachano (Great Barrington Planning Board member) has finally made its return to WSBS
Ed and Pedro examine issues facing Great Barrington and explore the question, “why don’t they just fix it?” They discuss the complexities, the competing interests, the less obvious costs or consequences, and the missing information that explains why It’s Not That Simple. They do their best to steer clear of opinion and to just point out the issues that make the problems more complex than they might appear.
Although both men serve on elected town boards, they are not speaking for those boards or for the town in any capacity. They are only representing themselves on the radio. The program airs every other Friday morning at 9:05 on WSBS. The talk show covers town issues that one may think may be corrected by a common sense solution but isn t always the case for a variety of reasons.
We hope everyone will take a look at the designs and help us work out the details, said Chris Rembold, assistant town manager and director of planning and community development. In the meantime, the existing one-way road scenario will remain for the next year or two, or until we can get enough funding to construct the improvements. The 25 percent design concept can be viewed at lakemansfieldgb.org. Anyone who reviews the plans is encouraged to complete a survey. The Selectboard, in June 2019, voted to close Lake Mansfield Road to vehicle traffic between the boat launch and the beach area due to erosion and poor road condition alongside the lake. As a temporary measure, the Selectboard reduced this portion of the road to one lane, which is how it will remain until the full closure can be implemented.
