Fri May 14 2021 | Kenny DeJohn | College PHOTO COURTESY OF BC ATHLETICS Boston College draws a first-round matchup against Fairfield Friday afternoon. Welcome to the Gameday Guide. Every weekend during the college lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse Magazine staff will riff here on the juiciest matchups, trendiest topics, biggest storylines and hottest takes. It’s NCAA tournament time. The first round of NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse tournament begins today at noon. The bracketology is finished and the predictions can be thrown right out the window. With 13 games sprinkled throughout the day, we’re sure to see an upset or two (or three?) on our way to determine second-round matchups.

All Boston College as Eagles Soar to 19-11 Win Over Notre Dame

Thu Apr 15 2021 | Kenny DeJohn | College PHOTO COURTESY OF BC ATHLETICS Freshman Belle Smith led all players with six points (four goals) as BC earned a statement win. If you came into Thursday evening’s ACC bout between No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 5 Boston College to be a back-and-forth affair befitting the nature of a typical top-five matchup, then the final result was certainly surprising. Boston College began the game on a blistering six-goal run and scored nine of the first 11 tallies, cruising to a 19-11 win in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Freshman Belle Smith led Boston College with six points (four goals, two assists), and Charlotte North recorded four goals, one assist and 11 draw controls. Rachel Hall made 11 saves.

South Bend Swagger: Notre Dame is No One-Hit Wonder

The Irish were 7-0, ranked No. 2 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20 and fresh off a 16-6 win over Vanderbilt in Nashville on March 11, the same day the NESCAC and Ivy League canceled spring sports because of growing COVID-19 concerns. The next day, the NCAA canceled its winter and spring championship events. They had already begun ACC play, besting both Duke and Boston College by four goals, but had yet to begin their rigorous journey through the conference’s best teams namely No. 1 North Carolina, the next up on their schedule, and Syracuse, a team that fluctuated spots in the top five all season but had cemented itself as a national contender.

2021 NCAA Lacrosse Preview: No 2 Notre Dame (Women)

“We’re fun to watch, for sure,” Roe said. The defense is now even better with the addition of Emma Schettig, a sophomore who unexpectedly entered the transfer portal after a successful freshman campaign at Maryland. Halfpenny had recruited Schettig while in high school, so there was some familiarity there. But even she was surprised at Schettig’s availability. “I was on vacation, off the grid,” Halfpenny said. “I was so off the grid that I didn’t even touch my phone on the weekend when we were on our way back from the Delaware shore. “Now it’s Sunday, I better start going through my messages. And there was an email from Emma Schettig. We’re somewhere in the middle of Pennsylvania, and we probably almost got in the car accident. My husband was driving, and I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ I read it out loud, and he was like, ‘Call her!’ But I didn’t have service.”
