In the weeks before he retired as a corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Cambridge Springs in late 2014, Erie County Councilman Brian Shank, who is now a Republican candidate for sheriff, faced allegations of misconduct that would later become part of a civil lawsuit against one of his peers.
In sworn depositions, Shank admitted to some of the allegations lodged against him by female inmates, including hitting inmates on the buttocks with a ruler on one occasion and intentionally discussing bacon in front of a Muslim inmate, which he said was part of a running joke between he and the woman.
Erie resident Chris Campanelli, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and 25-year member of the Erie County Sheriff s Office, is running for Erie County sheriff.
Campanelli, who turned 52 on Wednesday, has served with the sheriff s office since 1996, including the past four years as captain of the sheriff s office. In his present role, Campanelli is third in command, overseeing daily office operations.
Campanelli, a Democrat, officially announced his candidacy on Wednesday during a news conference at the Erie County Courthouse.
