WEST MICHIGAN â Unemployment in the state increased to 7.5% as of December, 2020, as many left the workforce to care for children or because of the global shut down largely impacting service industries.
Despite that dip, three West Michigan companies are hosting hiring events Thursday, March 11th.

Wayland Union High School starting 2 weeks of virtual learning Monday March 8th

WAYLAND, Mich. â Wayland Union High School announced they will be holding 2 weeks of virtual classes for all students starting Monday, March 8th.
School officials say the Allegan County Health Department recommended the move after an on-going transmission of COVID-19 cases were linked to the school. These cases include 3 or more students and staff who do not share a household and not in close contact of one another. Closure of the high school building to in-person learning
does not affect other buildings within the district.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â March means hockey to 750 lucky Griffins fans as MDHHS allows limited numbers into Van Andel Arena.
The first home games will be the week before St. Patrick s Day for games against the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday, March 13th and Tuesday, March 16th. Season ticket holders get first pick for these games and the rest of the season. The Griffins say they will be notifying fans of available tickets for the remainder of the season through the Griffins Nation newsletter.

Ineligible GVSU students receive vaccine by mistake

ALLENDALE, Mich. â Grand Valley State University released a statement to staff and students Thursday after a reported mix-up regarding vaccine appointments.
The school sent an email (pictured) stating that COVID-19 vaccines were available as a result of appointment cancellations; however, the email did not address eligibility requirements. In turn, students who should not have received the vaccine were able to get their first dose. Others were already waiting at the entrance when they were pulled from the line, while many more learned their appointments would be canceled.
Driver flees after hitting & killing pedestrian in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run late Wednesday night in Grand Rapids.
It happened about 10:30 p.m. near Michigan Avenue and Division Street, according to a news release Thursday.
Police and medical personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
The vehicle that hit the victim was described by a witness as a white SUV.
Investigators believe the vehicle is a white Nissan Rogue manufactured between 2013-2019.
GRPD is investigating a fatal traffic crash Division/Michigan. A pedestrian was struck and the suspect vehicle fled. Please avoid the area as officers investigate. Grand Rapids Police (@GrandRapidsPD) February 25, 2021
