Progress on School Choice in the States

In 2003, Congress will consider new choice legislation as well asthe reauthorization of several key federal education programs,including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Thispresents Congress with an excellent opportunity to expand schoolchoice, especially for the children who need it most.

School choice maximizes thebenefits of America's sizable investment in education to ensurethat all children have an opportunity to succeed.

A Time for Choice

The new D.C. Choice Incentive Program launches a five-year,federally funded program to provide close to 2,000 low-incomestudents in the District of Columbia with grants of up to $7,500each to attend the school of their choice, be it private,parochial, or other. These opportunity scholarships provide aworkable, hopeful alternative to open private schools to low-incomeand minority students trapped in failing public schools.
