From 2018:Evergreen could close, but community aims to keep it open
School Board Chairwoman Nancy Thrower and member Eric Cummings voted against closing the school. Thrower said she was upset because Evergreen was poised to make a C grade last year, possibly even a B, when schools were closed in March due to COVID-19.
Marion sent a letter to the state Department of Education showing that practice test data at Evergreen and Oakcrest elementary schools proved both would have made at least a C and should be removed from the state watch list. The state denied the request.
Testing was scrapped last spring and the state forced all intervention schools to remain on the list and school districts to pay for outside operators, regardless of what the practice tests scores revealed.
