Chobi Mela Shunno goes virtual UNB 27th February, 2021 08:59:41 Great news pouring on for connoisseurs of art. International photography festival s 11th edition Chobi Mela Shunno has now gone virtual. Organised by Drik Picture Library and Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, the special hybrid edition of the biggest photo festival kicked off in the capital on February 12 and concluded on February 21. Now, the festival will be on the web for the next six months, all thanks to renowned art agency ARTcon. The virtual exhibition was launched on the closing date of its physical edition in Dhaka. Art enthusiasts from home and abroad have lauded the online initiative.

Letter from an Unborn Child: Thotkata's act of protest

CHOBI MELA SHUNNO Photos: Sheikh Mehedi Morshed Rasheek Tabassum Mondira Rasheek Tabassum Mondira [Off] Limits , a group exhibition currently underway in Chobi Mela Shunno at DrikPath Bhobon, features projects by fourteen South Asian artistes. In a corner of the basement at DrikPath Bhobon, a series of letters are displayed for everyone to read. Letter from an Unborn Child by Thotkata, reflects the anguish and pain of an unborn child, as the kid addresses these letters to the readers, shoppers, and authorities related to the Tazreen factory fire in 2012.  On November 24, 2012, more than 119 garment workers died when a fire broke out in Tazreen Fashions Ltd in Ashulia s Nischintapur. Mimi, a five- months pregnant worker, was among the unidentified victims of the tragedy. The letters portray Mimi s unborn child s anger and plea to the ones present in the world today.

A panel discussion featuring female journalists and photojournalists was held on that day. Moderated by Saydia Gulrukh, the discussion featured Joyeeta Roy, staff journalist at Bangladesh Protidin, Sabina Yasmine, staff photojournalist at Prothom Alo, Sadia Marium, member of the Kaali collective and Zyma Islam, staff reporter at The Daily Star. The media industry in Bangladesh is largely male dominated. In Bangladesh, Sayeda Khanum and Selina Parvin have paved the way for female journalists by inspiring numerous young women to pursue the profession.
