Way Out West: Museum of Idaho enters a new era with expanded space, permanent exhibit

Way Out West: Museum of Idaho enters a new era with expanded space, permanent exhibit Share This How do you go about telling a story about your backyard that spans 15,000 years? That’s the challenge the Museum of Idaho has taken on with its permanent “Way Out West” that opened in January. “We have this incredible collection of artifacts, but haven’t had a place to show them,” said Jeff Carr, MOI’s public relations director. With a new wing built, the problem has been solved. “Way Out West” is the culmination of a capital campaign that has added 19,000 square feet of new space to the complex on Eastern Avenue, as well as an adjacent building for research and storage.

Museum of Idaho re-opens with two new exhibits

Museum of Idaho re-opens with two new exhibits Share This IDAHO FALLS Many east Idahoans have visited the Museum of Idaho at least a few times over the decades, but no one has ever seen all the potential it has to offer until now. After two years of renovations and at least four years of planning, the museum’s staff will once again open the doors to the public and unveil two new exhibits today. The first exhibit, labeled “The Way Out West,” is a long term addition to the museum, specifically curated to tell the story of eastern Idaho. Many of the artifacts premiered for the opening came from a storage vault housing 25,000 pieces that the museum simply didn’t have space to display until now, according to the museum’s marketing director Deborah Chessey.

A look at how east Idahoans handled a pandemic a little over a century ago

A look at how east Idahoans handled a pandemic a little over a century ago Updated at Share This IDAHO FALLS It was December 1918 when a heartbreaking obituary was posted in The Teton Peak Chronicle about two young mothers who had contracted a lethal disease. Pearl Willard, 26, and Myrtle Foster, 24, lay on their death beds in separate homes in St. Anthony, but their last thoughts were of each other. “A peculiar incident occurred just before the death of these two sisters who lived about two blocks from each other,” the newspaper article stated. “Just before she died, Mrs. Myrtle Foster said: ‘Come on, Pearl, and go with me. ”

Museum of Idaho becomes appointment-only viewing as expansion finishes

The Museum of Idaho is still open to the public. But between limits on attendance and construction on its upcoming centerpiece exhibit, there will be limited times to visit until late January. The museum moved to an appointment-only approach to visits in mid-November after Gov. Brad Little moved the state to Phase 2 and limited event attendance to 10 people at a time. Visitors now sign up for ”Me Time @ the Museum,” which gives them a one-hour block to go through the museum completely on their own. The program has seen high demand since the change, with all of the hourlong visit slots being claimed on the weekends since the change and the majority of the time slots filled during the week. Museum Of Idaho charges $42 for up to four people to attend during one of the reserved visits and $5 for each additional person.
