This is according to Prof. Chitja Twala of the History Department at the University of the Free State (UFS). Twala noted this against the backdrop of South Africa observing Freedom Day on 27 April. The network housed freedom fighters who left South Africa as they were targeted by the apartheid regime forces. The safe houses were set up in countries like Lesotho, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique and Swaziland. “After the apartheid regime banned liberation organisations such as the ANC, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) and others in the 1960s, these movements established networks of safe houses inside and outside the country,” Twala explained.
