Course as tensions in the middle east are very high also new chapter for u. S. Cosmetics giant avon its not part of the brazilian personal care group nutura the groups new ceo will join us later this hour. Stocks are extending a selloff, oil and gold prices continue to climb. This is iran and the white house, trade threats following of course the u. S. Air strike that killed irans top commander. Jim, happy new year. Happy new year. Nice to see you, my friend. Good to see you, buddy, way too long i missed you. I know you feel the same but i havent heard you opine on this market and what risk there is in the geopolitics, in the backandforth, our viewers im sure are familiar with the president s tweets over the last lets call it 24 to 48 hours, sort of saying weve identified 52 sites that we would take action against if in fact you do something, and also notifying the congress, he said, as well, if iran should strike any u. S. Person or target wed quickly and fully strike back, perhaps in
Moments ago. Our parent, nbcuniversal, investing 500 million in snap during the ipo, as the markets look to cap off a sixth straight week of gains. We have not had backtoback days of losses since the end of january. Ggv capitals managing partner glen solomon, wells fargo chief portfolio strategist Brian Jacobson join us to talk about the markets. Brian, and snap specifically, as this starts to clearly roll into some retail hands, what does that mean for tech and for overall sentiment . Well, i certainly hope that a successful ipo is a harbinger of further successful ipos. You know, you saw a decline in ipo activity last year because of market volatility, so maybe well see a little bit more activity for 2017. For the tech sector as a whole, i think that it shows that people are still optimistic about the outlook. Obviously, you cant extrapolate whats going on with one stock for the rest of the sector, especially such a diverse sector. We still tend to favor those parts of the tech secto
A little bit. You were negative on oil. Its gone up. Are you staying negative or has something so fund mentally changed youre saying i was wrong, its go up . I was obviously wrong. Im not sure if ill stay wrong, though and weve come such a long way its hard to advice folks to get in here especially with, you know, some of the signs that i continue to see that undermine this rally, brian. Particularly last night, the chinese trade data was bad and i keep saying that part of the oil rally here for it to sustain itself needs to be a strong asia and a strong china in particular and were just not getting that. You were spectacularly right before. You were one of the few people in the really negative camp and you were right. You were right before you were wrong, how about that . Im not running for office so i can be wrong thank you for that. I got some beach front property in arizona im going to sell you, as well. What would be the most if you had to pull out one bullish case and one bearish
Ford, all of these basically weaker than expected although slightly better than expected for fiat and chrysler. The real concern is when you look at car sales. Were not talking about suvs and pickups. Were talking about car sales. The numbers, thats not a mistake there. That is accurate. Fiat chrysler cars down 39 . Gm down 25 . Same with ford. Toyota, down 15. 9 . What is happening here . A couple things. Moderate gas prices are having an impact. People are saying if i have gas at, what, 2. 32 a gallon on average in this country, hey, its still relatively cleep to where it was a few years ago. As a result, you see people rotating to crossovers, suvs. So when you take a look at the japanese automakers sh the reason were showing you the stocks is because these guys have more exposure to the car market in north america relative to gm, ford, fiat chrysler. Keep in mind, those guys have much greater exposure to trucks and suvs relative to the japanese automakers. Any way you slice it, they
An alltime record. Heres the big question. Check out this chart. The last four times weve gotten to this level, stocks have tumbled. Is this the ultimate fakeout or maybe this time its the breakout. Guy, what do you stay . If you want to blast through that level, the high we made last may, its hard for me to say. I dont think its a fakeout. The market im not some raging bull here. I havent been. Im still not. But you have to respect the price action. Every piece of bad news has been digested and followed by the market going higher. Ive got to tell you, friday, the jobs number, the number alone should have had the market sell off. And it didnt. The answer to your question is, i think we absolutely go up and retest the 2135 level in the s p. I dont think you have to respect the price action so much, when you think where the market has been. The bottom off the january, february lows. Were back at 2135. Look at that. Theres no reason why you shouldnt make a new high. It has to be confirmed
