Wonder walls: inside a colourful Kent cottage

Wonder walls: inside a colourful Kent cottage Serena Fokschaner Look out for my car, it’s quite unusual,” says Lizzie Montgomery, giving directions to her home in a village in Kent. The designer has a knack for vivacious, colourful textiles, so I’m expecting, at the very least, a fuchsia pickup. The reality is more interesting. Montgomery’s runaround is a curvy Nissan, custom printed with one of her cheerful, polychromatic patterns. There’s an equally exuberant feel to the house she shares with her husband, Patrick, and their Bengal cats, Oscar and Hilda. Montgomery, whose clients include the Victoria & Albert Museum and Brabantia, bought the Arts and Crafts-style house in 2017. Since then, this self-confessed “pattern obsessive” has steadily transformed the interior, layering print and texture with intense colour, like a collagist tweaking a composition.

India s Military Campaigns Beyond Her Boundaries | Best Indian American Magazine | San Jose CA

3325722 orig We often hear that Indian rulers throughout history never invaded other countries – never established colonies in foreign lands.  The above statements are made, no doubt, to extol the virtues of our Hindu/Buddhist civilization – its emphasis on high philosophy, a penchant for peace, and deep-rooted spiritual (as opposed to materialistic) values. History generally bears out the validity of these statements. There are, however, some very notable exceptions. The earliest example of foreign invasion (to Lanka) comes from Ramayana, whose historicity is, at best, questionable. But we cannot deny that the ethos for foreign invasions clearly finds favor in Ramayana. Of course, gods like Rama are judged differently from mere mortals like us. Then, there is in a famous Bengali poem, the legend of Vijaysingha, a prince from Bengal, subjugating the same Lanka (a favorite whipping boy, it seems) and rechristened it Simhala. A similar legend, I am told, exists in Sri Lanka that

Its score sees Sakamoto, Byrne and Su aim to emulate the musical traditions of Imperial China with the use of traditional percussion instruments and Erhu – a two-stringed bowed fiddle. You can listen to the film s main theme above.

The Forgotten Korean War (of 1871)

You might not find this one in history textbooks. Here s What You Need to Know: Korea would not finally establish a treaty with the United States until 1882. Seventy-nine years before American troops launched the landing operation at Inchon during the Korean War, U.S. troops were involved in another amphibious assault in that corner of Korea. The Korean Expedition of 1871 sought to open trade with the insular Asian nation and avenge the destruction of an American ship crewed by kidnappers and pirates. Fifteen American sailors and marines won the Medal of Honor in the brief war, the first such medals awarded for service overseas. Though their actions were skillfully executed, the lamentable political context of the conflict may explain why their deeds are not exactly celebrated in the history textbooks.
