Oaxaca festival celebrates native Mexican traditions

The festival of Guelaguetza – the biggest cultural event in southwestern Mexico – showcases the traditions of 16 Indigenous ethnic groups and the Afro-Mexican community. Started 91 years ago, the government-sponsored event will run in the state of Oaxaca through July 28, and feature public dances, parades and craft sales. Leticia Santiago was elected as Centéotl goddess, which means she'll represent the Aztec deity of maize for a year and lead the Guelaguetza festivities. Up until recently, Santiago's ethnic group was not included in the festival, but the event's planning committee was recently overhauled and promised to be more inclusive.
