china doesn t want, though, a resurgent, unified nato, does it? i mean, that doesn t seem to be in china s playbook or to their advantage as they see it. and if the u.s. does you know, if russia is defeated in ukraine, doesn t nato become more important, more powerful? so, china doesn t really have very much to do with nato. all chinas issues in terms of security, geopolitics, the issues they bring up, have to do with east asia, southeast asia. it s not a large issue. for them, what has happened under xi, china has decided that america and germany is both unsustainable and bad for china. and so anything that erodes that in germany, anything that attacks american power, china has tended to either tacitly or openly support. it s a very bad decision by xi

ways here. obviously, they want to demonstrate to the russians they are still a partner and they want to provide enough support to russia so that russia can continue to keep the west distracted, keep weakening our democracies, from their perspective, that is in the interest of russia and china. but china s not interested in having the united states and its allies slap secondary sanctions on it for helping russia. it is not interested in a meltdown of the economic order. so china has other interests on the other side which i think the administration is hoping will compel president xi to pull back, certainly from any military support but also from any economic support to russia. in that vein, we were talking about this earlier, china doesn t want to be told what to do but how long this could play out, that is a big unknown.

have done this mass urbanization when they move the peasants off of the land into the megacities that they built, they built the cities on the little land that they have. they re incapable of feeding themselves. all of their food has to be imported now. you throw that on top of the real estate and the other factors in there, if i a rationale chinese person would not believe that they want to anchor themselves to a sinking ship that is russia. we re watching russia go down as a player on the international stage. they re headed down a road they cannot recover from. so china doesn t want to be part of that. martha: let me ask you about this language on taiwan. this is very interesting. there s a parallel between china s ambition to bring taiwan back into the fold completely into the china fold and what we ve seen with putin s desire to make ukraine part of russia again.
