questions how aligned the allies are on how to handle china amid russia s war in ukraine. schultz s beijing to plead united states an end to the war while the u.s. is reportedly debating putting sanctions on china, which would be something that would be tough for germany to swallow given that china is a top trading partner. so is there so much division on how to deal with china that the two leaders shouldn t be questioned together? oh, there is absolutely no division here. i mean, i think you heard chancellor yesterday in berlin speaking to his parliament talking about his concerns about the potential for china to deliver lethal weapons to russia. schultz and biden administration have been at odds before after schultz initially hesitated sending leper tanks to ukraine. a 1 abe braption brams tanked pushed that along others would follow suit. only a trickle followed. the reality of readiness for any war laid bear. scrambling on a china approach. we need to wake up as a country t
axios called it this. capitol hill s great unifier. china is the only issue percenting the bitter partisan bubble on a consistent and meaningful basis. what do you think of this? you ve been in washington a long time. hard to get bipartisan support. this coalescing around a common threat in china. i think that s right, dana. there is bipartisan consensus that china represents an enormous challenge to the united states. i welcome these hearings. i think they will be very important for waking up the american people to the challenge that we face in china. we have to recognize it s a challenge like no other we ve faced. soviet union in the cold war was a military power but an economic pygmy and had communism that at the end of the day failed in the marketplace with ideas of the but china is an emerging military threat.
and they are in need of leadership a president should show up. what he is demonstrating he will choose politics over people. he will come to virginia. i understand why he wants to come to virginia. virginia is rocking and rolling. when i was elected in 2021 and been in office a little over a year we have virginia moving economically. we re fixing education and standing up for law enforcement. i know why he wants to come to virginia because we re rocking and rolling. the flip side is you have to lead when you are president. he is a follower. unfortunately the ohio situation particularly screams for leadership and he hasn t done it. the challenge we have is joe biden would rather try to divide us as a nation and try to put people in this or that box as opposed to now bring us together and recognize we have to have unity against china. unity on the border because we miss fix the border. it is a national security crisis where we are seeing not only people s lives put in jeopardy
bets a bit by strengthening our presence in the region and strengthening friends and allies. it is a different china today because xi had a very different idea in mind for where china should head. he decided china should step up, take its place in the international system, try to modify that international system so it is more favorable to china and adopted a much more aggressive policy internationally with respect to the neighborhood but also globally. that is a different china. i think it really is the result of a leader xi who had a different agenda for his country. it is a good thing we did those efforts we took to strengthen allies in the region. it is our relationship with those allies that we will need in order to deal with the china challenge. dana: steve hadley, congratulations on the book and appreciate you coming on. love to see you more often. thanks for having me.
