May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month nationally, and the Chillicothe Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding everyone who rides to do trained and sober. Post commander Lieutenant Tim Karwatske says the responsibility starts by ensuring you have proper safety equipment and are properly trained before you get on a motorcycle. In 2020, there were almost 4,000 crashes involving motorcycles that resulted in 214 deaths and 3590 injuries. The largest metropolitan areas of the state, Franklin, Hamilton, Cuyahoga, Summit, and Lucas counties, accounted for 34 percent of motocycle crashes in Ohio. Ohio law requires helmets for riders under 18 and drivers with less than one year of motorcycle experience. Passengers on motorcycles must wear helmets when the driver is required to do so.
