EP review: Bodom After Midnight – Paint The Sky With Blood
Bodom After Midnight release the late Alexi Laiho’s excellent final recordings, and remind the metal world of the massive talent we’ve lost…
Words: Sam Law
Paint The Sky With Blood was meant to be a new start for Alexi Laiho. Having captained Finnish melodic-death heavyweights Children Of Bodom for 10 albums and over two decades, the revolutionary guitarist and frontman had parted ways with his former bandmates, and began again with a new outfit. With Bodom After Midnight, the idea was to recapture the old-school attack, dialling-back on overbearing synths and aiming for a dual-lead-guitar dynamic that would, in-turn, stoke the creative fires.

What Alexi Laiho taught me: Bodom After Midnight remember their beloved bandleader
As his final recordings see the light of day on the Paint The Sky With Blood EP, the surviving members of Bodom After Midnight reminisce on life alongside the late, great Alexi Laiho…

When it was announced on January 4 that Alexi Laiho had passed away the previous week, it left the metal world in a particular state of shock. On one level, his leaving us with no warning, at the age of 41 seemed cruel and unfair. On another, though, it felt like the Finnish wildchild – who had formed his first band at the age of 13 and had recorded 10 Children Of Bodom albums as frontman, alongside dozens of guest spots and other releases – had woven himself so integrally into the fabric of modern metal that he could never truly go away.
The death of Alexi Laiho plunged the metal world into mourning in early 2021, and with the upcoming release of Bodom After Midnight’s debut EP, Laiho left us with some of the best songs of his career. In an exclusive interview with Bodom After Midnight guitarist Daniel Freyberg, he tells us about Alexi’s final recordings and the last time he saw the Children of Bodom legend.
Freyberg s final meeting with Laiho was at the filming of the “Paint the Sky With Blood” music video, less than two weeks before Laiho’s death in December 2020. “That was a good last chat with him. He seemed to be very happy and very excited about the future,” Freyberg says. “I’m really happy that the songs he wrote and recorded are going to be released. He couldn’t wait to get those out.”
