The Maharashtra Government has appointed Sitaram Kunte, an IAS officer of 1985 batch as the new Chief Secretary. Kunte, who is currently the additional chief secretary (home) will succeed the outgoing CS Sanjay Kumar whose term ends on Sunday.
Kunte and his batchmate Praveen Pardeshi were two contenders for the CS post. However, Pardeshiâs move to opt for a foreign assignment after he was removed as the BMC Commissioner and appointed as the additional chief secretary (urban development) has gone against him. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday night signed the file and Kunte was informed on phone on Saturday about his appointment.

The Brihanmumbai Mumbai Corporation on Thursday issued updated coronavirus-related guidelines amid a rise in daily cases in Maharashtra as reported 5,427 new cases.
After a gap of 75 days, the state reported more than 5,000 infections, according to PTI. It had reported 5,229 infections on December 4, which had been followed by a gradual drop in cases.
BMC Commissioner S Chahal said that buildings in the city will be sealed if there are more than five active cases. “Stamps will be put on back of the hands of the patients staying in home quarantine,” Chahal added. “300 marshals will be hired to keep an eye on people traveling in local trains without face mask. Besides, additional marshals will be hired to keep an eye on violators in Mumbai.”

Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra s Amravati, Yavatmal, and Akola districts, Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar on Thursday directed the respective district collectors to immediately declare containment zones in the areas where the number of COVID-19 positive patients is high.
COVID-19 cases are in large numbers in Achalpur taluka of Amravati district, Amravati Municipal Corporation area, Yavatmal, Pusad, and Pandharkawada in Yavatmal district, Akot and Murtijapur talukas of Akola district and Akola Municipal Corporation area. The Chief Secretary has directed to declare all these areas as COVID-19 containment zones.
The daily positivity rate of COVID-19 patients in Akola district is 32 per cent and the weekly positivity rate is 24 per cent. Amravati district has a daily positivity rate of 48 per cent and 35 per cent per week while Yavatmal district has a daily and weekly positivity rate of 15 per cent.
