then i believe republicans and democrats can work together, our citizens deserve this. and so much more. so why not join forces and finally get the job done? democrats and republicans should get together and unite for the good of our country. true lov for our people requires us to find common ground. this is our mission, but we can only get there together. i am asking all members of congress to join me in dreaming big and bold and daring things for our country. of course, this is a president whose behavior since his inauguration has fallen short of the presidential standing we saw last night. argues illegal votes cast by people in the country illegally cost him the popular vote. attacks the federal judges withholding his travel ban as so-called judges. he blames generals for the loss of chief ryan owens in the raid on yemen and he says his critics might be desecrating jewish cemeteries to make others look
his gold star wife, watched and wept from the seat next to the president s daughter ivanka, an incredibly moving, an incredibly powerful moment. but it is important for all of us to focus not only on special moments in big speeches like that, but also on larger policy implications. words matter. deeds matter as well. case in point. the yemen raid in which 30 civilians including nine children were killed according to the government of yemen as well as chief petty officer owens. after the raid went down the chairman of the senate armed services committee and former p.o.w. john mccain questioned how much of a success the raid truly was. the response from the white house and press secretary spicer was this. the life of chief ryan owens is done in service to this country and we owe him and his family a great debt for the information that we received during that raid. i think any suggestion otherwise is a disservice to his courageous life and the actions
ran over to him and started putting pressure on his leg. he says obviously a moment he ll never forget, especially losing his best friend. ryan, president trump condemned the kansas shooting in his congressional address last night. has the surviving victim responded to the president s remarks? reporter: well, he heard those remarks and he said he was still just very cautious about how to move forward. and he has to have a conversation with his family about whether or not they move from here, but he says the entire family and community have been so good to him he does feel like this was an isolated incident. he works at garmin. he said that organization has been great to him in the few days, but he s obviously going to be tough without his friend here. obviously he was tragically taken. jake? ryan, thank you so much. appreciate it. coming up next in our pop culture lead, president trump might not like this. late night host cone an o brien is sending jobs to mexico. mr. o brien joi
the tea leaves of things he says not for attribution off the record, as homelanding out some promise that he ll be a different kind of president. reporter: as for the moment of the night, the president s tribute to the widow of fallen navy seal ryan owens who died in a raid in yemen few are doubting mr. trump s sincerity. and ryan is looking down right now, you know that, and he s very happy because i think he just broke a record. reporter: but on the president s claim that the raid yielded valuable information ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemy. reporter: republican senator lindsey graham is not so sure. my advice is let s celebrate this young man as a hero and not oversell, and i don t know if they re over sell, but we ll eventually find out. reporter: writing the speech was a trump team effort
cnn. srinivas died from his gunshot wounds last week. he was shot on wednesday. he was an engineer for gps maker garmin. his body was returned to his homeland for a traditional hindu funeral. earlier this week the victim s friend is also originally from india and is currently recovering from gunshot wounds. let s bring in cnn national correspondent ryan young. he s in kansas. ryan, obviously it s traumatic not only to get shot, but also to lose a friend. what did the injured man have to say to you? reporter: jake, he is still upset about this. you can see the growing memorial outside the sports bar where they were hanging out. they were just on the porch like the two men are there talking and watching a game. all of a sudden someone came up and started screaming toward them. they did their best to avoid it and all of a sudden about a half hour later they heard some shots. listen to the sound he s still recovering from the gunshot wound. somebody says, he is back with the gun. it s
