U.S. Route 1 traffic has been slow during the summer Boothbay region tourist season for decades, and this year, it could be worse than it ever has. Edgecomb Selectman Mike Smith reported the Maine Department of Transportation project to improve traffic for the U.S. Route 1 and Route 27 intersection will be delayed. The project was originally slated to start this spring, but now the project won’t begin until mid-June. Smith contacted Project Manager Steve Groves who told him both 2021 Edgecomb projects will be delayed. Smith told fellow board members on May 17, the DOT had planned on finishing most of the U.S. Route 1 project prior to tourist season, but now it looks like it will last through fall.

Davis Island residents were notified last week when a proposed two-tiered Wiscasset Water District rate increase would occur. And on May 3, Superintendent Chris Cossette explained why. Cossette met with Edgecomb selectmen about the proposed increase and discussed other issues floating around regional water issues. On July 1, Edgecomb (Davis Island) ratepayers will see a 19% rate increase which covers additional hydrant rental fees. Cossette reported the annual hydrant rental rate would increase to $1,954.31 or $234 more. In 2022, the second rate increase would bring the fee to $2,579. Davis Island is the only portion of Edgecomb the Wiscasset Water District serves.

Edgecomb selectmen will hold an executive session Jan. 18 to discuss the possible sale of two Lallis property parcels. On Jan. 11, Selectman Mike Smith told other board members a possible sales agreement could occur. Local realtor Clayton Pottle approached the board last fall about buying a portion of the Lallis property. Negotiations were interrupted due to uncertainty over how the sale would impact the River-Link Trail which runs through it. Smith reported former Schmid Preserve Committee Member Bob Leone has identified a possible alternate trail route which would enable a sales agreement. “We have received a purchase and sales agreement from an interested party. We need to hold an executive session to discuss it, and possibly have a conversation about the remaining parcel’s potential,” he said.
