VMware Names COO Raghu Raghuram Its New CEO

The new CEO is a low-drama, low-risk choice, perhaps indicating that Dell is generally happy with the company’s direction and wants someone that can take the leadership role with the least disruption.

Sanjay Poonen leaving VMware

VMware Chief Operating Officer Sanjay Poonen, who oversaw all of VMware’s sales and customer operations, is leaving the multicloud software company after being passed over as CEO. Poonen, a software superstar in his own right who built the company’s end user compute organization into US$1 billion business, said in a tweet on Tuesday morning that he would share more on his “next adventure” in the next few weeks and month. “It’s been a great time at VMware the past seven years; friendships created, all we’ve built together, employees touched, and customers/partners impacted,” wrote Poonen. “Also excited about what I’m going to be doing next…Stay tuned.”

How VMware Wants to Power an 'Anywhere' Workforce

VMware has long been about B2B tech: virtualization, data center infrastructure, hypervisors, collaboration tools, mobility and a long list of other products and services. This is not technology to be sampled casually in a home office. However, the high professional quality of these things is why about 95 percent of companies globally with IT systems utilize something from VMware–whether it’s SaaS, IT infrastructure, app tools or any number of other products and services. Now VMware is following the worldwide WFH trend to make a concerted move to the enterprise edge and a home office near you. The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company has done this by drawing from its existing software lineup a slew of components, services and solutions and shaping them all into a next-generation home workbase called VMware Anywhere Workspace for distributed workforces. It was released April 20.
