The West Newbury Fire Department is replacing its more than 20-year-old vehicle extrication rescue equipment thanks to a $10,000 grant from the state Department of Fire Services.
Fire Chief Michael Dwyer said the town was among those who applied for 114 different types of eligible equipment, including personal protective clothing, gear washers and dryers, thermal imaging cameras, assorted hand tools and extrication equipment, communications resources, hazardous gas meters, fitness equipment and more
“We re very thankful for this funding, which will allow us to purchase a much-needed upgrade to life saving equipment,” Dwyer said. “Technology has changed greatly over the past 20 years and this equipment is a key asset to ensuring we are able to assist people swiftly and effectively in emergencies like motor vehicle crashes.”

West Newbury Police and Fire Departments
Fire Chief Michael Dwyer and Police Chief Jeffrey Durand would like to share guidelines and tips in regard to accessing help in the midst of an emergency during National 911 Education Month.
According to the National Emergency Number Association, approximately 240 million calls are made to 911 each year in the U.S. 911 Education Month is recognized across the country to conduct outreach and educate community members on 911 resources and practices. As first responders, we are prepared to respond at any time to any emergency, Dwyer said. The information we get from the initial 911 call is instrumental in ensuring we can get to the scene as quickly as we can. We encourage residents to always remember to share their exact location early on if they ever need to call 911.
